Ever worked at Macca's NZ? You might be owed some decent cash back - and they're paying up now

One gal in our office seriously got $74 from her shifts when she was 15.

A whole decade years worth of staff who have worked at McDonald’s across New Zealand could be in for some serious cash.

Back in 2016, MBIE audited a bunch of Kiwi companies and found that heaps - including Macca’s - needed to switch up how they handled leave and holiday pay to align with the Holidays Act 2003.

In 2019, Unite Union calculated that McDonald’s NZ owed upwards of $45 million to around 60,000 staff.

If you’ve clocked in at Macca’s anytime between November 1, 2009 and December 6, 2020, it’s worth checking if you’re owed even just a few bucks.

One of our gals in the George FM office actually scored herself $74.72 back!

She put the shifts in at her local Macca’s between 2016-2017 and wasn’t sure if she’d get anything from this payout, but after seeing her ex-coworkers sharing their own payouts on social media, she thought: “Okay, SURELY I get some cash too.”

The McDonald’s NZ website now confirms: “The fast food chain has got approval from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to begin remediation relating to annual leave and holiday annual leave pay for employees who worked at McDonald’s between November 1 2009 and December 6, 2020.”

You've just gotta have your IRD number at the ready for the ‘Check My Remediation Payment’ on the McDonald’s payroll website.

McDonald’s NZ spokesperson Simon Kenney told Stuff that not everyone who worked there over the last decade will get a payout. This was the case for our very own Brook Gibson from George Drive, who has been described as "bummed out" about his lack of cash.

But it never hurts to give it a check, eh?!
