In a breathtaking ceremony at Tuurangawaewae Marae, Nga Wai Hono i te po Paki was anointed Māori Queen in a ceremony "known as Te Whakawahinga”.
The news comes after the death of her Father Kīngi Tuheitia who passed away at age 69 and saw a wave of tributes for the leader known for his “humility”, “kindness” and “cheeky spirit”.
The coronation came with sincere support for the new monarch, who is only 27 years old. One commenter proclaimed “The greatness you come from will lead you … and us we are with you”.

Another commenter remarked “It is truly inspiring to witness the accomplishments of young women in Aotearoa” adding "their contributions are empowering and serve as a source of motivation for others”.
The impact of watching the new queen be anointed was profound for many Kiwis. “It was emotional watching her come through,” one person wrote. “Kia kaha mana kuīni”.
The decision was finalised over the last week as the Kīngi also had two sons who were in the running for the throne - Te Ariki Tamaaroa Whatumoana Paki and Te Ariki Turuki Korotangi Paki. The new Kuīni was chosen by the Kiingitanga council and “other rangatira from around the country”.
Before her Te Whakawahinga this afternoon, Nga Wai Hono i te po Paki was last seen with her late father at Koroneihana to celebrate his coronation. Haka group 'Angitū o Tāmaki Makaurau' also performed at Turangawaewae Marae in the final event to honour the King.
This isn’t the first time we’ve had a Māori Queen. Nga Wai Hono i te po Paki’s Grandmother Dame Te Atairangikaahu reigned as Monarch from 1966 until she passed in 2006.
